Alexis storm water tank
FRANCE, 2007
Construction of a 4,500m³ capacity storm water tank.
Restructuring the Parc Alexis storm water unit in Wingles (Pas-de-Calais) forms part of the sewer system rehabilitation works commissioned by the Communauté d’Agglomération de Lens-Liévin.
This tank, located at the centre of a major potable water catchment area, is intended to store water during heavy rainfall episodes before transferring it to a wastewater treatment plant and thus avoiding direct discharges into the natural environment to avoid pollution as much as possible.
The works include the construction of a circular tank using diaphragm walls. The tank will be entirely covered over and one section of the cover will take traffic. With its equipment, this autonomous tank will be connected to the different supply and outlet networks.
Solétanche Bachy was responsible for the construction of the diaphragm wall and used its subsidiary, Solétanche Bachy Pieux, to install the Starsol piles.
Techniques
A diaphragm wall is a reinforced concrete wall that is made in situ. The trench is prevented from collapsing during excavation, reinforcing and casting by the use of supporting bentonite slurry. The slurry forms a thick deposit (the cake) on the walls of the trench which balances the inward hydraulic forces and prevents water flow into the trench. A slurry made of polymers can also be used.
A pile is a structural element driven into the soil for transferring loads and prevent deformation. Its slenderness ratio is not limited.
Pile shafts can be uniform and rectilinear, telescopic and belled out.
Piles can be installed either separately or in groups. They can also form a retaining wall, a mixed curtain wall, contiguous piles, secant piles and composite curtain walls, such as Berlin walls and similar. Piles are also used as precast beams to be placed in the structure of the building they support.
