Aug 20, 2009 - The port of Cotonou

The contract for the extension of the port of Cotonou, Benin – south quay design and build - was signed on 4th August last.

Solétanche Bachy has been appointed as the main contractor for the construction of a 600m long quay designed to provide a 15m water draught (post-panamax vessels). The client is a government entity called MCA-Benin and financing has been provided by the American government through the Millennium Challenge Account. The Supervising Engineer is Royal Haskoning.

Following on from the construction of the north quay in 1979, the south quay project is based on the same principle. It includes the construction of two diaphragm walls: the quay wall which will be approximately 30m deep and a rear wall approximately 10m deep, also used as the foundations for the gantry crane rear rail. The 2 walls are connected using 30 m long steel tie rods. The project also includes general excavation works, civil engineering, quay equipment (excluding rolling stock) and, at a later date, dredging for the quay. Works are due to start in September and to be completed in June 2011.
