Nov 3, 2008 - Tyne Tunnel in UK : a new tunnel under a river | |
The existing Tyne Tunnel is the only way to cross the river Tyne between the North Sea and Newcastle-upon-Tyne town centre. Since its completion in 1967, it has always been very congested during peak hours. The new tunnel, 1600 m in length with a 360 m section under the river, will double the capacity of the existing tunnel. It will be used to relieve congestion and will improve road safety. Construction works on the new tunnel commenced last March and will be completed in December 2010. Bachy Soletanche Ltd, a Soletanche Bachy subsidiary, is responsible for the provision of the retaining walls (diaphragm walls, composite walls and pile and grout walls) to approximately 1100 m of cut and cover tunnel both North and South of the submerged tube tunnel. |
