Aug 26, 2009 - Tunnel construction in Hong Kong

MTRC has awarded contract C703 to Dragages Maeda Bachy Soletanche Group JV.

The scope is the construction of twin running tunnels to connect the existing Sheung Wan Station with the new Sai Ying Pun Station. The tunnels are only 750m long but are to be constructed through very complex geology in an extremely congested urban environment.

The tunnels will be constructed partly by TBM in mixed and soft ground and by drill and blast method where the full face is rock and there is a minimum 5m rock cover to the tunnel crown. The TBM launching shaft will be constructed by diaphragm walling in an existing playground where the only access is a 5m wide lane between high rise residential blocks.

A unique feature of the project is the requirement to demolish 150m of existing overrun tunnel. The new tunnel will connect to the existing overrun tunnel and where the tunnels overlap the existing tunnel has to be demolished and backfilled prior to the construction of the new tunnel. The tunnel will be dismantled and backfilled using a purpose built Bessac air plenum machine.
