Sept 1, 2008 - Completion of the Castor 2008 site in Paris | |
For more than 10 years, the SNCF and the Réseau Ferré de France having been working on the renovation of the RER C tunnel. This project, called Castor, has been ongoing for over a 20-year period and, each summer, a section of tunnel is renovated. The section to be renovated in 2008 was located between the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Musée d’Orsay. Jet grouting was used to strengthen tunnel foundations: 390 jet columns were constructed this year including 190 along the side walls, representing 2,006 m of grouted column. One of the challenges posed by this site was time management because the construction of the jet columns could only take place during a brief interruption of traffic on the line. After approximately 2 months of mobilisation, columns were constructed from the 15 July 2008 to the 6 August 2008 and brickwork and finishing took place between the 6 to the 14 August 2008. The site was demobilized on the 29th August 2008. For the successful completion of these works, the group employed 120 staff who worked 20 hours per day, 5 days each week. In order to avoid inconveniencing neighbouring residents and tourists, open air plant and silos were concealed behind camouflage structures, 7500 tonnes of spoil was removed using barges on the Seine and delivery of 3,000 tonnes of cement took place overnight. |
