Aug 18, 2008 - Two record achievements have been broken when excavating the «Carré de Soie» mains sewer in Lyon

As part of the restructuring process of the Vaulx-en-Velin mains sewerage system, the Greater Lyon Urban Community awarded the construction of the "Carré de Soie" mains sewer to CSM Bessac, a subsidiary of Solétanche Bachy. This tunnel structure follows a curved alignment and is driven beneath a densely populated urban environment. It was constructed using horizontal pipe jacking techniques and the largest micro tunnelling machine currently in use in France with an internal tunnel diameter of 2000 mm.

The second record comes from the length of the tunnel structure which is 966 metres and was constructed in a single section. This is another ‘first for France. The mains sewer was completed in just 4 months, including the tunnelling machine starting-up period and was excavated without disturbing any of the surrounding structures.
